This appears to be the new iconic Georgetown photo opportunity
In ten minutes near the fountain at Georgetown Waterfront Park yesterday, I saw at least dozen versions of this “run under the jets” photo, including multiple takes from several subjects.
Well, it’s no sitting on John Carroll’s lap, or in the big green chair at Duke Ellington High School, but it beats standing in front of Georgetown Cupcake, blocking the bike lane.

Hey DC residents, don’t forget to vote today! (And tell your friends, too).
Polls are open until 8 pm, and if you don’t vote, it’s less effective to complain when you don’t like things that the DC Council decides! (And if you didn’t know, this is a special election for the Councilmember At-Large seat previously held by now-chair Phil Mendelsohn).
- If you don’t know where your polling place is, find out here: http://www.dcboee.org/voter_info/find_pollingplace/
- If you are not registered to vote in DC and would like to register, you can register at your polling place by bringing a government ID with your address, or one of the following (with your address):Current lease or utility bill, bank statement, government issued check, paycheck/stub with your name and address, or other government issued document that shows your name and address
- If you’re not sure who to vote for, here’s a voter guide that DCist put together, which gives some brief snapshots of the field and links to all of the candidates’ websites and other sources of information, as well as providing some information on today’s ballot initiative for a Home Rule Charter amendment.

A gorgeous morning to get up early and ride down to the Tidal Basin and along the Potomac for the cherry blossoms.
If you like these, I have a few more photos from the morning up on Flickr.
Thank goodness for jacquesofalltrades and his photography skills!

The National Mall got a new memorial yesterday, if only briefly. As part of One Billion Rising, Baltimore-based feminist group FORCE installed a temporary memorial recognizing survivors of sexual assault. The group greated giant letters out of a statement from a rape survivor and floated the eight-foot-tall words onto the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

On 16th St in Washington, someone decided to spread the Valentine’s Day love, literally. All the “One Way” signs up and down this main artery through the city now say “One Love” instead.
Isn’t that precious.
DC just has so much love to give. Happy Valentine’s Day, y’all.
It’s a great sentiment, though I’d hate to be the DDOT employee who has to scrape the stickers off!
Hey, that’s right in my hood!

The pink neighborhoods have more women. The blue neighborhoods have more men. Hetero men. Take note.

With the passing of a shy centenarian, some worthy DC institutions will certainly remember his generosity.
Richard A. Herman lived in the Watergate for more than 40 years and was a longtime patron of the arts, but the shy railroad heir was virtually unknown in Washington social circles for much of his long life. Until this week.
Family Matters of Greater Washington is set to hold a splashy news conference Wednesday at the National Press Club to announce that Herman, who died in November at 100, left the organization 60 percent of his vast estate — $28 million, which the group says is one of the largest gifts ever to a local social service organization.
And the Kennedy Center said Tuesday that Herman left $15 million to the National Symphony Orchestra and the Washington National Opera — the largest bequest in the institution’s history. (via Philanthropist Richard A. Herman leaves fortune to local charity, symphony, opera - The Washington Post)
While it is somewhat sad that this man died with little family around him (primarily because he outlived many relatives), the generosity without a need for public glorification is refreshing.

“DC/MD/VA Residents: It is very cold; with wind chills, it feels between 7-10 degrees. If you see a homeless person sleeping or just cold with nowhere to go, please take note of the cross streets and what type of clothes they are wearing, and call 1-800-535-7252. The Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness will pick them up and transport them to a free shelter. Help a stranger in need and share this info!”
It could very easily be you.
